Carl Sagan

Well, I’m not going quite that far back to basics. But everything needs a place to start. Therefore I offer you this post. Having just started this blog back up it is extremely likely, in fact I’d lay down money on it, that it’ll probably suck. Not only that, but you probably won’t even be reading it, as no one will be able to find the damn thing to start with. But that’s ok.

This is actually my second starting post. The first time around the blog was taken over by comment spam in slavic languages after I forgot to turn on Akismet spam filtering and left it to fester for about a month.

Not so this time. This time I happily report that I am already up to two–count em, two–posts. That is statistically speaking a 100% improvement so far on my previous attentiveness to this blog. And I guarantee there will be more to come.

This blog is to be my creative expression outlet. I’m trying to get back to writing, and I’ve decided that if I want to seriously give that a chance, then I need to get involved with the writing world. I need to be more social and interact with the writing community. This blog is step one in that regard, as I’m going to use it to openly chronicle my exploration back into the world of the written word.

So I restarted this site, put up a single post and then ended up just leaving it for a while (It’s such a pain to have to actually make a living, you know).

While I was looking the other way, my single post turned out to be really, really popular–with spammers from Russia. I finally came back around the other day and found that the one worthless post I’d put on here about restarting the site had 84 comments from spammers.

What I realized when I looked into it, was that when I’d installed wordpress and set up this site, I’d forgotten to activate Akismet, the blogger’s best friend and anti-spam comment plugin. Well, I went to wordpress.com, got my api key, and activated Akismet. I then deleted all of the spam comments and just for good measure I’ve deleted the post as well, since now Google’s going to think that page is spam. I’ll add a new, new introductory post to take its place.

Hopefully this burst of activity on this blog won’t completely sap my creative ambition for the next couple of months.
